BOTOX® Cosmetic, Injectables

2 Minute Read:

The Birmingham Specialists offer three types of botulinum toxin injectable treatments (neurotoxins): BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and Jeuveau®.

Keep reading to find out the benefits of each injectable treatment so you can identify which one is right for you.

What Is a Neurotoxin?

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxic protein produced by a type of bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.

All of that is to say that BOTOX® Cosmetic and its competitors are made from naturally occurring products. These injectables have been FDA approved and are scientifically proven to reduce the impact of dynamic wrinkles in the face (the wrinkles that develop in response to repeated muscle movements).

Manufacturers create neurotoxins with a very minimal dose of the botulinum toxin—just enough of the toxin is used to paralyze muscles temporarily.

“BOTOX” is the most popular term for neurotoxins (similar to how “Kleenex” is often used for tissues), but there are several different strains, including:

  • Onabotulinumtoxin A (BOTOX® Cosmetic)
  • Abobotulinumtoxin A (Dysport®)
  • Prabotulinumtoxin A (Jeuveau®)

What Are the Uses for BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is most commonly injected in the face to treat crow’s feet, forehead, and lower brow wrinkles. These injections may also be available “off-label” to treat expression-causing wrinkles on the lower region of the face.

A BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will typically last between three and six months before a follow-up appointment is needed.

What Are the Medical Benefits of BOTOX® Treatments?

BOTOX® treatments have also been approved for many medical uses. Most commonly, BOTOX® can help people with muscle and nerve disorders.

Some of the medical uses for BOTOX® include treatments for:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Crossed eyes
  • Eyelid spasms
  • Severe over sweating (hyperhidrosis)
  • Overactive bladder

What Are the Uses for Dysport®?

Dysport® is mainly used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles between the eyebrows. Dysport® is excellent for more extensive treatments as the product disperses around the injection site quite well.

The treatment can last for up to four months before a touch-up is necessary.

What Are the Uses for Jeuveau®?

Jeuveau® is the latest treatment on the market and, therefore, often referred to as “Newtox.” Like Dysport®, Jeuveau® is most often used to treat severe frown lines around the eyebrows. This injectable is specifically made to target cosmetic concerns.

It’s recommended that patients receive Jeuveau® touch-ups three times a year.
